Artist statement

My art sits at the intersection of technology and humanity: Where artificial, coded, rigid graphics meet the natural, free unpredictable human form. Through a combination of drawing, painting and digital art, I explore the blurred boundaries between chaos and control, the cerebral and the physical... where is human innovation taking us?

Extended Bio

Joanna Wilson’s art is a paradox of thoughtful drawing and exuberant expressionism. Born and raised in the Highlands of Scotland, there is a lilting quality to her handling of form reminiscent of the glens where she grew up. But her figurative compositions often incorporate industrial elements, which seem to reference the urban environments where she has also lived and worked as an artist. She graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art and the Wimbledon School of Art, before work and further study took her far and wide, from the Hayward Gallery and the Royal Albert Hall to Yale University. The recipient of numerous scholarships and awards, Joanna’s art can be found in public and private collections throughout the world. Her paint-pouring and mindfulness workshop, Go With the Flow, reflects her growing interest in the metaphysical power of art and has sold out several times at various venues throughout the North East. She has been selected as a Featured Artist by Saatchi Art Online and exhibits frequently in her local area, most recently opening her own gallery space in Grantown-on-Spey. OPENSPACE and The Vault exist with the aim to showcase not only Joanna’s work, but also to support other up-and-coming artists in connecting their work with new audiences. Currently on display is an exhibition of her abstract figurative art, Heartsong, as well as a selection of lighthearted illustrations featuring a local highland coo and his furry friends. Her custom-built studio, also in Grantown, is a hive of creativity. There you will find her multitasking (she is a mother of four), helping out a friend or ‘making a mess’ … as she so humbly describes her creative process! She looks forward to meeting you.
