Artist statement
Working in the medium of oil paint, I Investigate our connection to the everyday object. I question when an object stops becoming a possession and transforms into a part of the self. Being a fraternal twin also has a large influence on my practice resulting in themes of similarities and differences, multiples, and sets of paintings.
Extended Bio
Moray School of Art graduate 2023, my practice through the medium of oil paint explores our connection to objects as an extension of ourselves due to how much value we attribute to them.
The sum of our collected objects accumulated within our homes or valued environments can become an outer representation of ourselves. Investigating our connection to the everyday object as an extension of the self, I am inspired by how these connections arise between the owner and the possession. In my practice, I question when an object stops becoming a possession and transforms into a part of the self. These objects that we accumulate are nostalgic and connect us to memories, people, and places.
Using oil paint, I explore this connection by removing the object from its everyday environment. The value and sentiment of the objects are represented by the care and treatment of the surface of the board as much as the painted object itself. The soft curved surfaces represent the significance of these objects. Whether broken, worn, or pristine, all these objects can still hold the same value and the strength to hold within our memories. These paintings which are either displayed in a diptych or show a multiple, reflect the exploration of my experience of being a fraternal twin. Themes of similarities and differences also feature within my paintings.
