Artist statement

I'm a textile artist and quilter. Working from my studio in Strathdon I design and create framed work, wall hangings and quilts from substrates which I dye, print and mark using various surface design techniques. Once collaged I work into my pieces with free machine and hand stitch. Each piece is unique and often connected in abstract way to the landscape.

Extended Bio

Living in the foothills of the Cairngorm National Park I'm surrounded by mountains, forests, rivers and wildlife. I'm drawn to nature and intrigued by the lines, shapes, shadows and marks on the land around me, both natural and man made. These influence and form an integral part of my process. Work begins as a basic concept; a seed triggered perhaps by a photograph I’ve taken, a few lines of poetry, a page in my journal or just thoughts that have been evolving subconsciously. I develop it through process, trialling different surface design techniques and ideas using dye, print and paint until I find the one that feels right. As each stage is completed there is a feeling of excitement as the work develops and I connect with it. The final stage brings it all together using free machine and hand stitch.
