Artist statement
Zero waste, handcrafted bags inspired by the wild landscapes of Scotland. My colour palettes reflect the rugged hues of the Highlands & North East. I mainly use heritage materials such as Scottish waxed canvas & leather, whilst also repurposing offcuts & climbing rope, giving new life & adventure into pieces that would end up in landfill.
Extended Bio
I've been sewing bags since 2014, after graduating with a degree in Fashion Design from Gray's School of Art. I originally began making bags after taking up rock climbing, and designed my own chalk bag. I'm incredibly inspired by the outdoors, and when not sewing, I'm usually found hiking hills, or in the forest with my sketchbook. Sewing is one of my passions, and through my small creative business, I hope that my bags allow the wearer to bring the feeling of the Scottish wilderness with them wherever they go. Sustainable, responsible making is at the core of my practice, and I use mostly UK sourced materials that are rich in heritage, whilst working in a zero waste ethos. At the moment, I'm interesting in finding creative ways to repurpose waste textiles and bring new life to reclaimed materials such as retired climbing rope. This year sees my ten year anniversary of Fernweh, and I'm looking forward to welcoming visitors to the studio during NEOS to chat all things sewing and leathercraft, and look to the future of my creative practice.
