Artist statement
I have worked with textiles all my life as a teacher and exhibitor. I treat my pieces as works of art from murals to hats, scarfs and accessories, all based on local hand-felted merino wool. I am from Madrid, trained in Paris and partly based in Elgin. I take inspiration from nature using plant-based dyes from the beautiful countryside of Moray.
Extended Bio
I have never stopped researching textiles and techniques since I started working with textiles in 1985. From the beginning I was inspired following a course given by Ana Roquero to work with natural dyes. I then applied this on the high heddle loom with my plant-based materials at the time, such as sisal and jute.
While initially my large tapestries we intended to be displayed on the wall, I was more interested to see them in their own three dimensional space as works of art in their won right and I was finally able to do this in 2010 when I installed my pieces in the famous Circulo de Bellas Artes in the centre of Madrid.
I have also worked as a textile teacher for 35 years at an adult education centre in Madrid, where I have been able to not only pass on my skills but also to further develop my own textile techniques as well as experiment and expand my knowledge of patchwork and natural dyes.
While I began working on large scale textile works of art, over the years I have scaled this down to wearable objects, starting with hats where my initial inspiration was the fashion of the 1920’s and 30’s. I started using the same materials as in the murals and gradually added more techniques such as manual wool felting and coco fibres (for wedding hats).
With these hats I participated in several editions of the fashion fairs in Madrid and Paris (Pret-a-Porter).
I have also collaborated in theatre and cinema productions making several made-to-order works, one for example a felt bedspread for a film by Pedro Almodóvar.
I belong to the ACTM, a textile association in Madrid where I have also collaborated in several exhibitions.
