Artist statement
My work captures interplays between the ever-changing qualities of Scottish landscapes and our evolving connections with them. Infused with lively colour and light my work embodies the characters of landscapes and our shared experiences of them. I will be sharing the pop-up studio space with the talented Amanda of The Felted Hare and Gail of Croft Leather.
Extended Bio
I have long been fascinated by landscapes and I am never happier than when completely immersed within them. Whilst I have drawn and painted throughout my life, this form of connection with landscape is just one element of my story.
Landscape researcher, community heritage officer, and most recently artist, the connections between people and landscape have been a constant throughout my life. Since 2021, Adventures with Landscape has allowed me to pursue my dream of exploring this through creative practice from our home in Tomintoul, within the Cairngorms National Park.
I am fascinated by the constantly changing nature of landscapes and also with the myriad of relationships that occur within them, the weather, geology, landforms and people. I believe that landscapes are not just what we live on but live within. They have their own character and stories to tell. I love the play of light as it bounces and collides with different elements within the landscape, whether that be absorption from the rocks, gleaming off water or snow, or the dancing shadows created from the flora and fauna within them.
More recently I have also been experimenting with ways of bringing materials from the landscape into my work. Taking minimal foraged materials I incorporate these within small-batch handmade papers as well as wreath making and mixed-media work.
At the pop-up studio at Inveraven I will have some of my signature style paintings on show, including some new work, as well as examples of some of my more recent experiments too!
Throughout my work – from original works and high-quality prints to creative workshops and one-to-one tuition - I hope to connect you to landscapes that matter to you, perhaps even inspiring you to take your own first creative steps!
