In 2003, a collective of artists, makers, and designers based in the North East of Scotland started North East Open Studios (NEOS). We provide an informal contact network for artists and makers alike and help the public access the wealth of creative talent throughout the North East of Scotland. NEOS is run on voluntary grounds as a community organisation.
In 2020 North East Open Studios was presented with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for volunteer groups. In 2018 we were a finalist in the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards under the Best Cultural Event or Festival section and in 2007 we won the Northern Lights Tourism Award for best Aberdeenshire Tourism Initiative.
In a normal year, we produce the NEOS Book that highlights who, what and when for that year’s North East Open Studios event, which sees the creatives of the North East open their studios during a 9-day period in September. This year the book is online-only but a printed NEOS Map will be distributed by members. The book and map also act as a year-round Directory of Artists residing and practising in the North East of Scotland.
